You can use a Western Digital external hard drive for a variety of things including data backup and storage and as extra hard drives for your computer or laptop. They produce drives that can easily be carried around or stationary external drives. Many times photographers and movie buffs will use an external drive for all of the editing and media storage.

The My Book external drive series is one of Western Digital's most popular external drive series. They come in several different editions including the Home edition, Premium edition, Office edition, Studio edition, Essential edition, World edition and Mirror edition. The My Book external drives tend to resemble a large hardback book. Most of the time them drives are black.

The Pro edition is very similar to the premium edition but has much faster data transfer speed as it uses firewire 800 connections. The Studio editions have a quad interface with Firewire 400, USB 2. 0, eSata and firewire 800 connections. This external hard drive is specifically for Mac computers.

A similar edition to the Premium is the Pro edition. However the Pro edition has a firewire 800 connection which is much faster than a firewire 400 connection. The Studio edition of the My Book has four different connection options; a firewire 800, eSATA, USB 2. 0 and firewire 400. The studio edition also can be used for Mac operating systems.

If you need a Network-attached storage system then the World edition was specifically designed for this purpose. It also can connect to the internet from anywhere. Several of the drives such as the Pro and world drive all come in an edition II version. These edition II can be used for data striping or data mirroring as they have two hard drive disks.

There are edition II's available of the World and Pro drives. These edition II have two hard drives so that you can use a drive for data mirroring or a drive for data striping.

The largest of the western digital external drives can hold up to two terabytes of information. Most of the external drives from Western digital operate using a Plug and Play connection. This means that the drive has all of the software it needs to work and you do not need to install anything onto your computer. The drive also will not need an external power source as it gets power through the computer connection.

Western digital also creates many accessories that can be used for your external drives. You can find cases that can be used to carry your external drives. These can be great protection particularly if you carry your external drive in a bag with a lot of other items. They also make skins that can be used to protect your case from scratches.

You can find some Western Digital external drives that can be used for Mac operating systems. The drive will have all of the Mac compatible software already preloaded so you can use the drive immediately. There are My Passport and My Book dries that can be used immediately with a Mac computer. These drives can be used for whatever you want.
